““Start saving your money right now. Next year you MUST bring illustrator/author Henry Cole to your school. I have never in my 39 years as a media specialist had a more mesmerizing, entertaining, informational, inspirational speaker/presenter…whatever you want to call it. He was AMAZING!!! I can’t even begin to tell you what this day was like. Let me put it this way. Our second grade teachers were supposed to be “relieved” 15 minutes into his presentation by our special area teachers. When it was time, though, the second grade teachers didn’t leave…they skipped their planning time to stay and listen to him! Our first grade teachers were supposed to meet with our principal during their planning time. They begged her to postpone the meeting until tomorrow so they could come back and see his presentation a second time! I could go on and on, but exuberant gushing just doesn’t do it justice. I’ll leave it at this. I was expecting something good. What I got was something GREAT!!!!!! ”

Kids loved it, teachers loved it, and most importantly, the kids were inspired. I have had countless kids tell me today that they are writing a book now. Many of them have plans to write their book and then illustrate it over spring break! There were several kids who checked out drawing books today because now, they want to practice drawing. I've even heard from several parents who have told me that their child doesn't usually get excited about things that happen during school, but they came home yesterday talking about your visit and now they want to read more of your books, or write their own book, or illustrate a friend's book.
So, please know that you made a difference yesterday in the lives of many people.
Thank you again and I hope to have the opportunity to meet you again in the future!”

Both of my kids were excited to share about the visit and it was nice to be able to talk to them about his message. What a talented man and what a treat for all!”

“Your visit to our school was such an inspiration to our young fourth grade writers! Our class was just at the point of revising our first personal narrative, so it was great to hear from a published author regarding revision. Your beautiful illustrations captured their attention. We went back to our rooms and our next lesson was drawing to music. My class thoroughly enjoyed A Nest for Celeste. They could really relate to the themes of home and friendship. Thank you for coming to our school, and truly making a difference in our writers.

As you know, it takes tons of hours behind the scenes to make something like this happen. I believe for some of our students this will be a transformational experience they will remember for a lifetime. (Mr. Cole) inspired students to believe in themselves and think differently about writing, drawing and reading. I can’t wait to talk to my girls about it tonight!

His ability to incorporate the importance of setting goals and writing down ideas was powerful. The pictures of his manuscript and the stories of it's numerous edits sent a clear message to the students. Hard work pays off! He challenged the students to follow their dreams with great desire and that was inspiring.”

Then, they would reenact their favorite parts...fun stuff! They had them down pretty good, too! But one little girl spoke up and said..."It made me so I couldn't breathe!" I asked her why and she replied, "He was so funny and I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe!" Obviously...you were a smashing hit! You took our breath away!

The students and teachers all LOVED you and gave you rave reviews, congratulating me on my choice of author (you made me look good!) When you shared your childhood stories about what inspired you to be an artist, your humor and excitement and honesty really captivated your audience from the kindergartners on up to the 5th graders (and the teachers too!) And I loved the way you were able to show how your personal inspirations like your love of nature and your admiration for Audubon led you to the choices you made as an illustrator and a writer. I think it's important for students to see that their interests and passions can and should shape their lives. I know our school will be talking about you for a long time!

Both of my children could not stop talking about Henry Cole's visit. He must be a very animated and engaging author. I learned quite a bit about Mr. Cole…and enjoyed watching my son imitate how Mr. Cole shared his stories.
Thank you for providing these opportunities to our children…I love their enthusiasm for good books! My daughter is already buried in her new book by the author…A Nest for Celeste.
”

“I am enjoying watching the children walk through the doors this morning as they stop and gaze at Henry’s drawing of Celeste. They are sharing memories of yesterday’s visit with Henry Cole with each other and with the library staff. I had a story planned for our story time this morning but changed the plan so that we could continue to share our stories and savor our time with Henry. It is amazing how many car conversations between younger and older siblings revolved around Henry’s visit on the drive home yesterday. I have never seen the children so excited after an author visit. Thank you Henry for such a joyful and enchanting day!
”
—Librarian, FL

Thank you so much again for coming in and putting smiles on our faces. Hope to see you again with a few more books out, because if you keep writing like you have been you will be the next George Washington of writing. My son is a third grader here and when school was over I asked him about your visit. He said, "That was the best assembly EVER! Now I know why you like him so much!" He still brings up your stories. You certainly know how to entertain children (and adults too)! When you were drawing Celeste with the music playing I had to keep my tears in check. It was emotional for me... not sure why. Thank you for a great time and I look forward to seeing you again in the future.
”

Most of my teachers are reading A Nest for Celeste to their classes and I've read all the picture books that you authored and many of the illustrated books to the students. Perfection, they are a joy to share. They make me want to find a child to read with!

“I just wanted to let you know that our entire staff and student body are still talking about your visit! You truly brought down the house! Our four year olds were in library with me today and they remembered absolutely every story you told. I also received calls from parents whose children could not stop talking about you, about buying sketch pads and about illustrations. When I was told your were amazing, what people say didn't even begin to do justice to how riveting, exciting and informative you are in person. I could not let a single moment pass without telling you how appreciative and fortunate we are to have experienced "Henry Cole" at his finest. ”
—Media Specialist, VA
“I was so inspired by your recent visit, I had to write you a note of thanks.
Thank you for visiting the students at our school... and for insisting that more students join the group for your presentation. Two of my sons were in attendance, one in 5th and one in 3rd. And as Library Aide, I was fortunate to enjoy your talk as well. I think I speak for all of us in saying that it is a joy to hear you speak. Your enthusiasm is contagious and your personality is genuine and endearing. Listening to you was entertaining and inspirational.

“Thank you so much for coming to my school to talk to us about yourself and your books. When you were talking I noticed something: you are the most HILARIOUS people I've ever heard. Your back up plan should be a comedian. I've never ever wanted or ever was a good artist but after you talked to us I might start drawing...
”

They had a fabulous time and I have heard so many of their favorite things. My oldest loved the story about your long grass and gave me a demonstration of you cutting the grass! My youngest was thrilled to have you sign our Naughty Little Monkeys book, it has been a bedtime favorite for many years.
Thank you for taking the time to encourage our children and instill a love of reading! It is appreciated very much!

Thank you so much for helping the children understand the important work of an author and illustrator.”

“I just wanted to write this to personally THANK YOU for a powerful presentation at my childrens' school. My first grader fell in love with Celeste and she HAD to have the book right away. I had to drive across the state (in Virginia) to find the book. And in my 4 year old class, they wrote their own version of the "Henry Cole" stories. (I would love to send the masterpieces out to you so you can see for yourself how you have affected their imagination.)
You certainly have a way of captivating your audience, especially the 4 year olds. To have their complete attention for the whole presentation was magical! THANK YOU for spending that special day. My son can definitely answer the question who Mr. Henry Cole is. You are truly blessed with a GIFT and thank you again for sharing your gift with us!
”
—Parent, Elementary School, Maryland

His presentation was, without a doubt, the absolute best author visit I've ever witnessed, and it was obvious from the swarms of students surrounding him that they felt similarly. Thank you to the PTA and all of the families whose participation in the PTA helped bring such a fantastic author/illustrator to inspire our students.

“It is impossible to put into words what a great experience our “Henry Cole Author Day” was this summer! Mr. Cole, you rock! It was such a pleasure having you during our Summer Reading Program. Our staff, crew of volunteers and patrons have not stopped talking about what an unforgettable day it was! With a crowd made up of preschoolers through senior citizens, fans to aspiring writers and artists, you were able to engage everyone with your great sense of humor, interesting family stories and enthusiasm for your work. Your passion for writing, illustrating and for the natural world is contagious. I cannot rave enough about what a delight it was to meet you and hear about what inspires you as an artist and author. Thanks again for being so accommodating, so excited to be with us and an overall enchanting guest. I have no idea how we will top this program next summer?!!!”
—Del Webb Library at Indian Land (South Carolina)
“I particularly enjoyed Henry Cole today. He shared his drawings, his past, and his present. When you feel like you know someone personally at the end of the presentation, I would call that successful. And the artwork he created right in front of us was amazing. I have it as my screensaver on my phone!”
—Attendee, Children's Literature Conference
“Henry Cole presented with a lot of energy and spunk, just like his illustrations do as they pop off the pages. I am very excited about his new book A Nest for Celeste and can't wait to share what I know about the story with my students this year. I can't wait to tell them how the artwork in the story was inspired by John James Audubon, an artist Henry admires. But I think I am most excited to say that I met Henry Cole!”
—Attendee, Children's Literature Conference
“Your presentation was a magnificent mix of humor and helpful information. It was the best presentation I have ever seen. My cheeks hurt from smiling so much!”
—Conference Attendee, (Michigan)
“It's been nearly two months and the children still can't help but talk about (your visit)... I can't sing your praises enough and hope other schools take the opportunity to host a visit. The journey to becoming lifelong readers begins with books that have interesting stories and engaging illustrations. Thank you for creating books that bring reading to life. The students of Mayport Elementary and I will forever treasure your role in their journey.”
—Media Specialist, Learning Leader (Florida)
“Thank you so much for sending Henry Cole our way. He was beyond wonderful. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face all day. The teachers are still singing his praises and I can't keep his books on the shelves.
The library was NOT quiet during his presentations. He had them rolling in the aisles! He was hilarious, but it was his authenticity I most appreciated. He spoke to the students right at their level and they were riveted. He was spot on with 2nd and 3rd grade. And in a very natural (not-at-all-pedantic) fashion he worked in the lifelong reality and necessity of revision, revision, revision which our teachers work so hard to instill in our students.
I have been bringing in authors and illustrators for more than 13 years now and I can truthfully say that Henry Cole was the best yet in presentation and message. Thank you again for sending him to us.
I have a reserve list a mile long for A Nest for Celeste!”
—Elementary Media Specialist (North Carolina)
“Thank you!!! We enjoyed your visit so much.
You will appreciate this.....A fourth grade teacher stopped in Friday to tell me about one of her students who shared that you had inspired her.....She talked her mom into going to Michael's (the craft shop) and they purchased a sketch pad and pencils....she had already turned out quite a few illustrations. My students were enthralled with your program and we have some who are not easily enthralled!”
—Elementary Media Specialist (North Carolina)
“This is my 17th year as a media specialist and I have had an author or illustrator visit each year. I can honestly say that no one has ever matched Henry's ability to entertain our children while educating them. His humor was engaging, but his ability to integrate his humor with serious lessons was outstanding. We never had to ask our children to pay attention; they were enthralled.
Henry taught the children about Audubon, about respect for nature, about the fact that good writers don't get it perfect the first time or the second or the third, etc., about the elements of a good story, and about the actual process of creating a book. He was clear about having used his childhood interests to create the perfect career for himself, which I am sure will be food for thought for the 7- and 8- year-olds of our school. I doubt that they will ever forget this visit.
Thank you all so much for making this possible.”
—Elementary Media Specialist (North Carolina)
“Your presentation was amazing—you had everyone involved and laughing and learning. The teachers are still praising you!”
—Elementary Media Specialist (California)
“Since your visit, the enthusiasm in this school for the art of creating books has been beyond my wildest dreams. Teachers and students have stopped me innumerable times to express how much they loved your presentation and even more powerful to talk about the writing that is happening since your visit. This alone leaves me in your debt, but my gratitude is double-fold as I’ve watched my first grade son create 2 of his own “dummy books” without any encouragement from his teacher or me this past week. Cooper had just begun finding books that he enjoys and choosing to read at moments that were not “mom created.” But writing of any kind would by far be at the bottom of his list of activities to choose and maybe more accurately at the top of any list of torture techniques! Your presentation truly turned a switch on in him to see the fun and beautiful relationship of words and pictures in a book and ignited something in him that could have been a very painful and long road for both him, his teachers, AND his mother. This is something I truly do not have words in which to express my appreciation and will be in debt to you for a lifetime. I truly hope every child has the opportunity to be sparked by your humor and love of the creative process.”
—Elementary Media Specialist (Virginia)
“I am very glad you got to come to our school. I thought you were really funny and I would've much of much rather listen to you than to go to math and sit there in complete boredom. ”
— Quincy, elementary student
“Outstanding! Henry Cole is a funny, entertaining and amazingly talented artist and speaker. His presentation kept all of our students (from Pre-K to 5th grade) engaged, and best of all learning about the process of writing and illustrating children's books from beginning to end. They even got to participate in creating an illustration for a story! This was one of our best author/illustrator visits yet!”
—Elementary Media Specialist (Virginia)
“I thought this was our best school performance yet! The kids loved being able to give input on a drawing he (Henry Cole) drew based on their thoughts and imagination.”
—First Grade Teacher
“My students thought Henry Cole was fabulous. They talked about his performance all day. They were particularly fascinated by his ability to take their ideas and incorporate them so perfectly into his drawing.”

“Boy, were you a hit at Forest Grove! I’ve been chuckling over your stories of childhood and really do believe you could turn some of them into books.
There isn’t a book left in the library with your name on it. They are ALL checked out. Both teachers and children raved about you. Thanks for a quality presentation.

“Henry is not only a storyteller but a performer as well. The 3rd through 5th graders were mesmerized throughout Henry's presentation. One student, with developmental disabilities, was so excited that he was practically jumping out of his seat. His teacher said that, while he rarely connects with other students, he spent the rest of the day retelling Henry's stories to classmates. What a gift Henry gave to him! In the month since Henry came, parents are still letting me know how much their kids loved Henry. Sisters are negotiating who gets to read A Nest for Celeste first. A third grader wants to be an author like Henry and therefore decided that he needs to be a more serious student. My daughter has convinced her dad to leave a patch in the backyard for her own meadow. We were so fortunate to have Henry come to our school. The younger grades are looking forward to having Henry present for them!

“I think you are the best and most funniest author and illustrator that ever lived. ”
—Josep, elementary student
“You recently visited our school, and I was MORE than thoroughly impressed with your presentation. You had our audience captivated and you gave us a great back story for how you became an author and illustrator. I was impressed how much you love conservation of nature and how you share it in your books. My students were SO inspired by all that you shared that they are writing and creating their own stories. Thank you for inspiring my students to not only to be good writers, but to be good citizens and take care of the environment that is around them. I also need to thank you for being so inspiring to our staff. We were all buzzing around talking about how great you were at presenting and how inspiring you were for us too! We hope to continue to show our great appreciation for how inspiring you were for us!”

“You...are hysterical! And the very clear message you sent to the kids was try and try again... write and rewrite! I loved it! And I've had such great feedback from the students and teachers about your visit. Parents have told me that their kids were inspired and now want to become writers and illustrators!

“No doubt you hear over and over again now students get excited about your books, following your visit. It is true. Our library does not have enough copies of your books to satisfy our students! With all the emphasis placed on tests, it is a pleasure to hear kids speaking the names of authors with the same familiarity as their favorite video games. You were a hit!”
